Brands Hatch on Friday 29th March was A dismal and wet place to
be, and this was The first day of the new season for the Renault
Clio Cup Championship, and we were hoping for a good test to enable
us to catch up with the leaders in this very competitive series.
With just 300Km of testing so far this year Dan wanted to try
a number of set ups in order to make the car faster, he also wanted
to gain more experience of the car, front wheel drive still being
a new world of motor sport for him and the team. But the weather
beat us; we just could not complete our work schedule.
Saturday dawned bright and clear, and Dan was selected to run
in the second qualifying group, with 43 registered competitors
the series has two qualifying groups and two qualifying races
on Saturday and a feature race for the top 32 on Sunday. 15 minutes
of qualifying saw Dan 8th fastest just 6/10ths off the fastest
time set by Andrew Jordan. This converted to 13th on the grid
for the feature race, a satisfying result for the first race weekend
in Clio’s.
Sunday saw a continuation of the good weather, blue skies and
even a little Spring warmth, the race started on time at 3:30
and Dan settled into a good dice with Philip House. There was
one safety car period that lasted just three laps, Dan ran to
a consistent pace finishing 12th overall, with his best lap equal
to his qualifying time, and more importantly equal to the front
runners.
A good result from a first race in a front wheel drive car, Dan
and the team are pleased with their performance, a lot was learned,
now we look forward to April 21st and 22nd and Rockingham Circuit.
